You may get confused when it comes to choosing the new TV. There a lot of choice available on the market for TV. Which TV is the one that you should choose? Let’s take a look at the 10 important things to consider when you consider to purchase a new TV.

1. Display Technology



In 2021, we can find that there are two main technology for display : OLED and LED. OLED is best when it comes to perfect black since its pixels can be completely powered off, while LED is better when it comes to peak brightness. LG and Sony are two major manufacturers of OLED TV. While LED are widely offered by most TV manufacturers. For similar screen size options and comparable specs, LED TV are usually lower in price than OLED TV.

Which one to choose : It’s about your preference. If you are looking for perfect black and infinite contrast then LG OLED is your choice. But if you are looking for better peak brightness or you simply have more limited budget, then LED TV is the one that you should choose.

Samsung, Sony, LG, Vizio, TCL and Hisense are major TV brands that offer wide range of TV series (especially in the US). Samsung offers 4K and 8K LED TV (Neo QLED, QLED and standard LED TV), Sony offers LED and OLED TV in both 4K and 8K resolution, Vizio offers more affordable LED TV and recently also offers OLED TV. Vizio LED and OLED TV are currently available in 4K UHD resolution only. We can also find that TCL and Hisense offer more affordable LED TV in 4K UHD and 8K UHD resolution.

Which one to choose : Brand is about preference. Samsung, Sony and LG can be called as the premium brands that usually offer more expensive TVs than Vizio, TCL and Hisense. So if you are looking for the best quality then you can go ahead with Samsung, Sony and LG, but if your budget is quite limited then Vizio, TCL and Hisense also offer good TV lineup.

5. Price

Price is one of the most important factor when we are looking for new TV. We need to count our budget before we decide which kind of TV that we should choose. OLED TV is typically more expensive than LED TV for similar screen size option, while better resolution also means higher price (8K UHD vs 4K UHD). For sure, the larger screen size options then the price is also higher. Different Brands are also different in price. TCL and Hisense are usually offered at the lower price than the premium like Samsung, Sony and LG.

Which one to choose : You can set your budget first then you can define your requirement. For similar price, you can find larger screen size option with different TV series or different TV brands.

6. Operating System

Most of TVs introduced in 2021 are smart TV. The operating system integrated with the smart TVs are different. There are four main operating systems for smart TV nowadays : Google TV/Android TV, Roku TV, TIZEN OS and WebOS. Google TV/Android TV are used mainly by : Sony, TCL and Hisense. Roku TV is mainly used by TCL. Samsung mainly used TIZEN OS while LG smart TVs usually use WebOS.

Refresh rate and its related motion technology are important especially when we use the TV as our gaming monitor or when we are watching our favorite action movies and sports. It’s a good idea to choose TV with 120Hz native refresh rate for better gaming experience. It’s also more excellent with more advanced gaming technology such as Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), FreeSync and G-Sync.

We need to know the number of HDMI and USB inputs on the TV that we are interested in. The more HDMI/USB inputs, then the more we can attach devices simultaneously. We also need to know what is the built-in Wireless and ATSC integrated with our next TV. In 2021, some TVs already come with WiFi 6 (802.11ax) and ATSC 3.0 (NextGen TV). WiFi 6 allows us to enjoy faster internet connection while NextGen TV allows us to enjoy 4K HDR OTA (Over the Air) entertainment.

Which one to choose: It’s a good idea to count the number of HDMI and USB ports that you need on your next TV to know which TV series that you should choose. TVs with WiFi 6 and NextGen TV is usually higher in price so if you are interested in WiFi 6 and NextGen TV then you should prepare more budget.

9. Warranty

Most of TVs come with 1 year warranty. But we may find that some special series have longer warranty. We can also purchase additional warranty that give us longer warranty for our new TV.

10. Lineup Year

Each year, most TV manufacturers release their new TV lineup. The newer lineup usually comes with improvements from the older one. So it’s a good idea to choose the most recent lineup. But we can also find that the series from the most recent lineup is usually higher in price than comparable series from older lineup.
