What is LCD?
LCD is Liquid Crystal Diode. LCD TV is a television display technology based on a liquid crystal display. LCD TV consumes much less power than plasma displays because they work on the principle of blocking light rather than emitting it.
An LCD display uses either a passive matrix or an active matrix display grid. The active matrix LCD is also known as a thin film transistor (TFT) display. The passive matrix LCD has a grid of conductors with pixels located at each intersection in the grid. A current is sent across two conductors on the grid to control the light for any pixel. An active matrix has a transistor located at each pixel intersection, requiring less current to control the luminance of a pixel. For this reason, the current in an active matrix display can be switched on and off more frequently, which improves the refresh rate.
Some passive matrix LCDs have dual scanning, meaning that they scan the grid twice with current in the same time that it took for one scan in the original technology. However, active matrix is considered a superior technology.
LCDs are all around us. Liquid crystal displays so prevalently, in fact, that most people couldn’t get through their day without using one. This technology is utilized in digital clocks, microwave ovens, car dashboards, calculators, stereos, thermometers, and even some bathroom scales! The applications for liquid crystal displays are almost limitless, so it should come as no surprise that this technology has revolutionized the most basic home appliance of all the television set.

What makes a Liquid Crystal Diode?
The twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal is the most common type of liquid crystal being used in display applications today (e.g., LCD televisions, LCD monitors, and LCD projectors). It has a naturally twisted crystalline structure. A particular feature of this crystal is that it reacts to electric currents in predictable ways-i.e., by untwisting to varying degrees depending on the voltage of the current to which it is exposed. Hence the “liquid” part of the crystal’s moniker: Rather than being an oxymoron (How can a solid also be a liquid?), the term refers to the relative pliability of the crystals themselves, which is to say, their twist ability.back to menu ↑
What type of BlackLighting does an LCD TV have?
The type of backlighting is the determining factor in what people today call LED TVs. The backlighting until recently has been traditionally CFL fluorescent backlighting. But more recently the backlighting has changed to the brighter and more luminous LED (light emitting diode) technology lighting. These LCD TVs with LED backlighting are technically still LCD TVs, but some have dubbed them “LED TVs,” to emphasize the LED backlights.
All LCD TVs offer progressive scan support and pleasingly flat screens by design. They also provide users with a bevy of input options, adding to their versatility. Most LDC televisions double as computer displays by allowing standard analog VGA (PC) input, a great option if you need your display to pull double duty as a PC monitor to save money and space. Nearly all LCD TVs offer the option to mount on a wall or under a cabinet.
While many support “HDTV compatibility” and “progressive scan” as features prominently displayed on the box, don’t forget that 99 percent of regular NTSC TV broadcasts and the typical DVD player won’t let you take advantage of these features.back to menu ↑
